How can you be eco-friendly when you are manufacturing disposable plasticware?

A challenging question, if there is one. At Simport, stuck between the proverbial rock and a hard place, we manufacture disposable plasticware in a world that has witnessed plastics of all kinds pollute the environment, being dumped in the oceans and contaminating wildlife and living organisms of all kinds.

At the same time, our products are indispensable, and being “disposable” offers better quality by preventing cross-contamination. An alternative to cleaning reusable glassware, which is energy-demanding while contaminating with its liquid waste more often than not, ends up in our waterways. While we use only well-characterized virgin resins, which will not affect the reaction within the finished product, something difficult to ensure with uncharacterized recycled resin from unknown sources. It is our scientific responsibility to make these choices.

The world wants us to demonstrate what we are doing to contribute to a better environment and threatens to exclude us if we don’t do enough. We introduced biodegradable products that are readily available. However, this did not meet any significant customer demand. Unsurprisingly, laboratory waste is most often incinerated, for valid reasons, which takes away any value a biodegradable plastic container may possess.

So let me share with you what Simport brings to the table. We are lucky to be operating in the province of Quebec, Canada. This region is fortunate with a lot of rivers. Our engineers found a way to harness this energy and turn it into electricity. Consequently, our injection molding instruments operate with electricity coming from 99% renewable sources. Zero contribution to GHG. So, do we deserve praise for this? No, we are grateful to have started here and continued manufacturing in this province.
